Resume Summary Examples: 15 Professional Summaries You Can Adapt
By Muhammad Shahid Khan · · 5 min read
Quick answer
A strong resume summary is two to four lines at the top of your resume: who you are (title and years of experience), what you are best at (two or three skills from the job advert), and one result with a number. Example: "Customer success manager with 6 years in B2B SaaS. Manages 60 accounts worth £1.2M and kept renewals above 94%."
| Length | 2 to 4 lines, 40 to 70 words |
|---|---|
| Formula | Who you are + top skills + one measurable result |
| Also called | Profile, personal statement, professional summary |
| Objective instead? | For students and career changers |
| Avoid | "Hard-working team player" and other clichés |
Recruiters read the top third of your resume first, and many decide in seconds whether to keep going. The summary is the first thing in that space. A vague one wastes it. A specific one makes the rest of the page easier to believe.

What is the formula for a resume summary?
- Who you are: your job title and years of experience, or your degree if you are new.
- What you are best at: two or three skills taken from the job advert.
- Proof: one result with a number.
Write it last, after the rest of the resume, so you can pick your best evidence. Use the words the advert uses, so both the recruiter and the applicant tracking system see the match.

If you have no experience at all, use a short objective instead: see how to write a resume with no experience.

What should I avoid in a summary?
- Clichés: "hard-working", "team player", "results-driven", "passionate". Show it with a number instead.
- "I" and "my" in every line. Resume summaries are usually written without pronouns.
- Saying what you want instead of what you offer.
- Copying an AI draft as it is. Recruiters spot generic text, and every claim must be true.
- Going over four lines.
Summary, objective, profile or personal statement?
They are mostly the same thing with different names. "Personal statement" and "profile" are common on UK CVs, "summary" in the US. An objective focuses on the role you want and suits people with little experience. For the regional differences, see resume vs CV, and to make sure the summary is read correctly by software, see ATS-friendly resume guide.

Should I use I in a resume summary?
Usually not. Resume summaries are normally written without pronouns.
What is the difference between a summary and an objective?
