Cheat Codes vs Trainers vs Mods: What Is the Difference, and What Is Safe?
By Muhammad Shahid Khan · · 5 min read
Quick answer
Cheat codes are built into the game by its developers, so they are the safest option. Trainers and tools like Cheat Engine are separate programs that change the game’s memory while it runs. Mods change or add game files. Trainers and mods are generally fine offline but can carry malware if downloaded from untrusted sites, and using them in online games can get your account banned.
| Cheat codes | Built in by the developer; safest |
|---|---|
| Trainers | External programs that edit memory |
| Mods | Changed or added game files |
| Mod menus | Injected tools, often aimed at online play |
| Main risks | Malware, broken saves, online bans |
| Online games | Never use trainers or mod menus |
"Cheats" can mean four very different things, and the difference matters. One is a feature the developer put in the game. The others are third-party software, and that is where the risks come in: viruses, corrupted saves and banned accounts. Here is how each one works, and how to stay safe.
I build Cheatly: Game Cheat Codes, a free offline cheat code app for iPhone and iPad, and the screenshots here come from it. If you want every code on your phone next to the controller, get Cheatly on the App Store.
What is a cheat code?
A cheat code is a feature built into the game by its developers. You enter it as typed text, a console command, a controller sequence or an in-game phone number, and the game itself switches the effect on. Nothing is downloaded and nothing is changed on your computer. That makes cheat codes the safest kind of cheating. Their limits are set by the game: some disable achievements, and they never work online. See how to enter cheat codes on every platform.

What is a trainer?
A trainer is a separate program that runs alongside a PC game and changes values in its memory, such as health, money or ammo, usually with hotkeys. Cheat Engine is a general-purpose tool that does the same thing manually. Trainers work in games that have no cheat codes, but:
- Antivirus software often flags them, because editing another program's memory looks like malware behaviour. Sometimes it really is malware.
- A game update can break a trainer and crash the game.
- They can corrupt a save if a value is pushed past what the game expects.
What is a mod?
A mod changes or adds game files: new maps, characters, graphics, balance changes or quality-of-life fixes. Many games welcome mods, through official tools or workshops such as Steam Workshop. Mods are not always cheating at all. The risks are installing them from untrusted sites, and mods that conflict with each other or with game updates.
What is a mod menu?
A mod menu is an injected tool that adds an overlay full of cheats, often aimed at online modes. This is the riskiest category. Online games use anti-cheat systems to detect them, and using one online can get your account banned, sometimes permanently. Paid mod menus are also a common way to deliver malware.
Which is safest?
| Type | Malware risk | Save risk | Ban risk online |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in cheat codes | None | Low | None (they do not work online) |
| Official or workshop mods | Low | Low to medium | Depends on the game |
| Trainers and Cheat Engine | Medium to high | Medium | High if used online |
| Mod menus | High | Medium | Very high |

How do I cheat safely in single-player games?
- Use built-in cheat codes first. If the game has them, you do not need anything else.
- Back up your save before trying any cheat, trainer or mod.
- Download tools only from well-known sources. Never from links in comments or video descriptions that promise "free money".
- Never turn off your antivirus because a download tells you to.
- Stay offline. Close online modes completely before using any trainer.
- Expect achievements to switch off. See do cheat codes disable achievements.
Are cheat codes "cheating"?
In single-player games, you only change your own experience: replaying a favourite level with infinite ammo or skipping a grind. Developers include codes precisely so players can do that. Cheating becomes a problem when it affects other people, in online and competitive games, and that is where trainers and mod menus lead to bans.
How Cheatly helps
- 3,300+ single-player cheats across 84 games, all stored on your iPhone or iPad.
- Shown the way your platform enters them: PlayStation and Xbox button chips, copyable PC console text, and in-game phone numbers.
- Search by name or by effect, such as "wanted" or "helicopter", and filter by category.
- Favourites for the codes you use every session.
- Read aloud, so you can enter long combos with the controller in your hands.
- Works offline, with no account and no sign-up.
Download Cheatly free on the App Store and stop searching the web mid-game.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a cheat code and a trainer?
A cheat code is built into the game by its developers. A trainer is a separate program that changes the game’s memory while it runs.
Are game trainers safe?
Trainers from well-known sources are usually fine for offline single-player games, but antivirus often flags them and fake trainers can contain malware.
Is Cheat Engine safe?
Cheat Engine is a well-known memory editor, but only download it from its official site, never bundled installers, and never use it in online games.
Can I get banned for using cheat codes?
Built-in single-player cheat codes do not get you banned. They do not work in online modes.
Can I get banned for using a mod menu?
Yes. Using mod menus or trainers in online games is detected by anti-cheat systems and can lead to permanent bans.
What is a mod in gaming?
A modification that changes or adds game files, such as new maps, graphics or gameplay changes.
Are mods the same as cheats?
Not always. Many mods add content or fix problems. Some mods add cheat-like features.
Can trainers corrupt my save?
They can, especially after a game update. Back up your save before using one.
Why does my antivirus flag a trainer?
Trainers edit another program’s memory, which looks like malware behaviour. Some fake trainers really are malware.
What is the safest way to cheat in a game?
Use the game’s built-in cheat codes, keep a backup save and stay offline.
Does Cheatly install anything on my console or PC?
No. Cheatly is a reference app on your iPhone or iPad that lists official codes. Nothing is installed on your game system.
