UK Motorway Rules and Signs: Lanes, Smart Motorways, Red X and Breakdowns

By Muhammad Shahid Khan · · 5 min read

Quick answer

On UK motorways the limit for cars is 70 mph unless signs say otherwise. Keep to the left lane unless overtaking, and never undertake. A red X means the lane is closed: you must not drive in it. Signs are blue, and the 300, 200 and 100 yard countdown markers show the next exit. If you break down, leave at the next exit or stop in an emergency area, and call 999 if you are stuck in a live lane.

Motorways are statistically among the safest roads in the UK, but they are fast, and the rules are different from ordinary roads. They also have their own signs, which come up in the theory test. Here is what you need to know, including smart motorways, which older revision material often skips.

I build RoadTick: Driving Theory Test, a free UK theory test app for iPhone and iPad, and the screenshots in this guide come from it. If you want to practise as you read, get RoadTick on the App Store.

Who can use a motorway?

Motorways are banned for pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, motorcycles under 50cc, and some slow vehicles. Learner drivers in England, Scotland and Wales can drive on motorways since June 2018, but only with an approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls. Learner motorcyclists cannot.

What are the main motorway rules?

  • Speed limit: 70 mph for cars and motorcycles; 60 mph for cars towing and for goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes. Variable limits on gantries are legal limits.
  • Joining: use the slip road to match the speed of traffic in the left lane, and give way to traffic already on the motorway.
  • Lane discipline: keep to the left lane unless overtaking, and return to it when it is safe. Do not hog the middle lane.
  • Overtaking: only on the right. Do not undertake, except in queues moving slowly where the left lane is moving faster.
  • Never stop, reverse, turn round or walk on the carriageway.
  • Gap: at least two seconds, four in the wet. See stopping distances.

How do smart motorways work?

Smart motorways use overhead signs to manage traffic. On all lane running stretches, the hard shoulder is a permanent running lane, and there are emergency areas marked with orange surfaces and blue signs with an SOS phone symbol, usually at regular intervals. On dynamic hard shoulder stretches, the hard shoulder is only a running lane when a speed limit is shown above it. A red X over it means it is not.

What should I do if I break down on a motorway?

  1. Leave at the next exit or pull into a services area if you can.
  2. If not, stop in an emergency area or on the hard shoulder, as far left as possible, with your wheels turned to the left.
  3. Turn on hazard warning lights, and sidelights in the dark or in poor visibility.
  4. Get out on the left, away from traffic, and wait behind the barrier if it is safe.
  5. Call for help using an emergency phone or your mobile.
  6. If you cannot leave a live lane, keep your seat belt on, turn on hazard lights and call 999.

Do not put a warning triangle on a motorway. It is not safe to walk on the carriageway.

Which motorway questions appear in the theory test?

  • Speed limits for different vehicles.
  • What the red X, flashing amber and flashing red signals mean.
  • Lane discipline and when you may use the right-hand lane.
  • What to do after a breakdown, and where emergency phones are.

Motorway rules are one of the topics that cost the most marks in mocks: see driving theory mock test strategy, and the full sign system in UK road signs explained.

How RoadTick helps

  • Practice questions for every theory topic, each with a plain-English explanation.
