Theory Test Day: What to Bring, What Happens and What to Expect

By Muhammad Shahid Khan · · 5 min read

Quick answer

Bring your photocard provisional driving licence and arrive early: without the licence you cannot sit the test, and you lose the fee. Personal items go in a locker. You can do a short practice session, then answer 50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes (pass mark 43). After a break of up to 3 minutes you watch the hazard perception tutorial and 14 clips (pass mark 44 of 75). You get your result before you leave.

Most theory test nerves come from not knowing what will happen. The process is the same at every centre, and once you know it, the day itself is very manageable. Here it is step by step, from the night before to the letter you leave with.

I build RoadTick: Driving Theory Test, a free UK theory test app for iPhone and iPad, and the screenshots in this guide come from it. If you want to practise as you read, get RoadTick on the App Store.

What do I need to bring?

  • Your photocard provisional driving licence. This is the ID that matters. If you forget it, or it has expired, you will not be allowed to sit the test, and you will lose the fee.
  • Your booking confirmation is useful but not required.
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you need them for reading a screen.

Leave plenty of time. If you arrive late, you may not be allowed in.

RoadTick tracks your progress toward test day so you can see when you are ready.

What happens when I arrive?

  1. Check-in. Staff check your licence and confirm your details.
  2. Lockers. Phones, smartwatches, bags, notes and coats go in a locker. You may be asked to turn out your pockets and show your ears and wrists, to check for devices.
  3. Seat. You are shown to a computer in a quiet room with other candidates. Headphones are provided.

How does the multiple-choice part work?

  • You can do a practice session of up to 15 minutes to get used to the screen. It does not count.
  • Then you answer 50 questions in 57 minutes. Some ask about a short video clip.
  • You can flag questions and come back to them, and change answers until time runs out.
  • The pass mark is 43.

After this part, you can take a break of up to 3 minutes before hazard perception.

Practise in the same format as the real test: one question at a time, with an explanation after each answer.

How does the hazard perception part work?

  • A short tutorial video explains how it works.
  • You watch 14 clips, one with two developing hazards, and click when you see a hazard developing.
  • The pass mark is 44 out of 75, and you cannot replay clips.

For timing and scoring, read hazard perception test tips before the day.

When do I get my result?

At the end, you are told your result before you leave the centre. If you pass, you get a pass certificate number, which you need to book your practical test. It is valid for 2 years. If you fail, you get a letter showing which areas cost you marks, and you can book again after 3 working days.

Can I get extra help on the day?

Yes, if you ask when you book. Options include extra time, a voiceover reading the questions in English or Welsh, and British Sign Language. Mention any reading difficulty, disability or health condition at booking.

How do I calm theory test nerves?

  1. Take a final timed mock a day or two before, not on the morning itself.
  2. Check your licence and route the night before.
  3. On the day, read every question twice and use the flag button rather than freezing on a hard question.
  4. Take the 3-minute break to reset before hazard perception.

For the full format, see the UK driving theory test guide, and for a final-week plan, see driving theory mock test strategy.

How RoadTick helps

  • Practice questions for every theory topic, each with a plain-English explanation.
  • Timed mock tests in the real format: 50 questions in 57 minutes, scored against the pass mark of 43.
  • Hazard perception practice to build the timing the second part tests.
  • The Highway Code broken into short sections that are easy to revise.
  • UK road signs and markings with clear images and meanings.
  • Progress tracking that shows which topics still need work before you book.
